The Hong Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity was founded in March 2005 to integrate the basic and clinical scientific research programs in the field of diabetes, metabolic syndrome and related diseases conducted by the CUHK Diabetes Care and Research Group since 1990. Supported by the Hong Kong Foundation for Research and Development in Diabetes (HKFRDD), donations and a large number of research grants, the HKIDO encompasses 6 Centres, all led by clinicians and basic scientists with extensive experience in the respective fields. The Institute aims to provide a platform to promote local and international collaboration to achieve academic excellence in our pursuit of prevention and diabetes and its complications through innovation and development of human resources. The 6 Centres are:
- Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinical Pharmacology Trial Unit
- Diabetes Applied Genomics and Bioinformatics Centre
- Diabetes Epidemiology and Outcome Research Centre
- Diabetes Drug Discovery and Cell Replacement Centre
- Diabetes Education and Professional Development Centre
- Yao Chung Kit Diabetes Assessment Centre
